WORK PRACTICES

Work practices include all the things you do while you are doing the job. People who work away from a traditional office setting can adopt many different work practices that will reduce their risk. For example:

BEHAVIOUR PROCEDURES

There is a considerable increase in mental health and/or drug addiction in certain areas. Many are good people who just need professional help. Remember - Be Kind, be aware and be smart.

When you are confronted with potentially impaired public:

  1. Do not intervene.
  2. Make no eye contact.
  3. Do not get in their path.

If you are in an area with houseless personnel:

  1. Don’t get in their path, allow them space.
  2. Consider the area around their tents, carts, sleeping bags as their space.
  3. Stay in groups when possible.
  4. If you can, have a spotter or a buddy to watch your back.
  5. Don’t wear ear buds.

If you are in an area with potential thieves – Pick pocket opportunistic:

  1. Don’t wear “bling” “jewels, leather jackets, etc.
  2. Don’t show off your phone.
  3. Hide tools in a bag.
  4. Don’t flash money.

If you are dealing with irate co-worker, public member or customer:

  1. Focus on the emotions first. Remain calm and try to calm the other person.
  2. Avoid escalating the situation.
  3. Listen carefully and try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes.
  4. If cannot calm the person, ask for help.

If you see a hazard associated with the public:

  1. DO NOT intervene.
  2. Report it to your supervisor as soon as it is safe to do so.

POLICE SERVICES NEAR THE WORKPLACE

IF YOU ARE IN DANGER OR IN CASE OF RANDOM ATTACK:

  1. Leave the area if you can.
  2. Don't turn your back to the hazard/attacker - keep your eye on it and get our of area.
  3. Tell the anyone near you about the hazard/scream.
  4. Notify emergency personnel.

VIOLENCE INCIDENT

Any violence incident should be reported immediately and investigated, and findings analyzed. Report can be done by using the Form” Workplace Bullying and Harassment and Violence Report”. Investigation to follow company’s investigation procedures and documentation.
