PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES

A biohazardous spill must be cleaned up in a timely and safe manner. Prior to any work commencing supervisors must conduct a hazard assessment of all applicable work areas. Any hazards that are found during the hazard assessment must be addressed prior to any work commencing.

PROCEDURES FOR WORKING SAFELY

  1. Restrict access to the spill until the required clean-up is done.
  2. Assemble supplies, including biohazard waste bags and required PPE (gloves, safety glasses, face shields, and fluid resistant coveralls) prior to beginning clean-up.
  3. Make sure that any cuts, scrapes, or other skin abrasions are properly covered. Put on disposable, leak proof gloves, safety glasses, and if there is a potential for splashing put on a face shield.
  4. Clean up the blood using paper towels. Carefully place the soiled towels in the biohazard waste bag.
  5. Disinfect the area using a 1:10 mixture of bleach and water (leave mixture on area for 10-15 minutes). The bleach used must contain at least 5% sodium hypochlorite. After 10-15 minutes use paper towels to wipe up the disinfected area. Place the soiled towels into the biohazard waste bag. Note: For extremely large spills, use a commercially manufactured blood spill kit and follow their instructions.

BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS – CLEANUP OF BLOOD Date:
  1. Pick up any broken glass with tongs or forceps. Never pick up broken glass by hand, even if wearing gloves. Place the broken glass into a sharps container.
  2. If the spill occurs on carpeting, the area should be flooded with a commercially available product that kills pathogens and eliminates the potentially harmful hazard. A wet vacuum may be used to completely dry the area. Any equipment used in the cleanup must be thoroughly disinfected (inside and out) prior to putting away. If the carpet requires removal, ensure the removed carpet is disposed of into a biohazard waste bag.
  3. Carefully remove PPE so not to touch the possibly contaminated outside. If possible, turn disposable PPE inside out as you remove it. Place all items into the biohazard waste bag. Tie the bag tightly and dispose of it properly. Ask management for a proper disposal location. Note: Under no circumstances should biohazardous waste be disposed of in a regular garbage can.
  4. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water immediately after the cleanup is done.
  5. If any skin (cuts, scrapes, dermatitis, chapping) or mucous membrane (eyes, nose, mouth) contacts blood, ensure that you wash the area with soap and water immediately, notify your supervisor, and complete an incident report.
